The pathway through which the 8-pointed star moved from Palestinian tatreez to Western Christmas sweaters cannot be precisely documented, and that untraceable quality is itself evidence of colonial erasure. Patterns extracted, renamed, decontextualised, and recirculated until even their origins become obscured. What remains visible is what Palestinian scholars like Susan Muaddi Darraj experience: the recognition of their own cultural heritage commodified on Western retail shelves, completely severed from Palestinian authorship.
